Texas Manicurist Continuing Education: Required Hours, Topics and How to Complete Them Online

Texas manicurist continuing education is the one part of renewal that a nail professional controls completely. This guide explains what the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requires, how the elective hours work, what to check before buying a course and how to confirm the hours reached the state.

Quick Answer

Texas manicurist continuing education totals 4 hours of TDLR-approved coursework every two years: 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking awareness and 2 elective hours. A manicurist who has held a Texas license for at least 15 years completes only 2 hours (sanitation and human trafficking awareness). The course must come from a department-approved provider, and the hours must post to the TDLR record before the renewal is submitted.

Does Continuing Education Apply to Manicurists?

Yes. TDLR treats the manicurist license as a practitioner license, the same category that includes the Class A Barber, Cosmetology Operator, Esthetician, Manicurist/Esthetician, Eyelash Extension Specialist and Hair Weaving Specialist licenses. The state's continuing education page for barbers and cosmetologists states that a total of 4 hours of department-approved CE is required every two years to renew. In its June 16, 2025 bulletin, TDLR told all barber and cosmetology licensees that starting September 1, 2025, anyone licensed fewer than 15 years must complete 4 hours of CE at renewal.

In plain terms, Texas manicurist continuing education is not optional, and it is not a different program from the one cosmetologists and estheticians follow. A manicurist uses the same rules, the same provider list and the same reporting system. Those shared rules are laid out in our guide to continuing education for cosmetologists in Texas.

Texas Manicurist Continuing Education Hours: The Full Breakdown

The 4 hours are made up of fixed components:

CE ComponentHours
Sanitation1
Human trafficking awareness1
Elective hours2
Total4

One hour of CE equals 50 minutes of actual instruction time, and TDLR does not award credit for taking the same course more than once. That second rule matters for a manicurist who renews every two years: a repeat of the identical course from the last cycle does not count again, so the course needs to be checked against the previous certificate.

The 15-Year Track

A manicurist who has held a Texas license for at least 15 years completes 2 hours: 1 hour of department-approved sanitation and 1 hour of department-approved human trafficking awareness. TDLR waives the other two hours. The track depends on years of licensure only.

What Counts as an Elective Hour

The two elective hours are flexible but not unlimited. TDLR allows them to come from any of the following:

  • Any topic listed in Section 83.202 of the TDLR rules, which is the curriculum standard for licensed programs
  • Sanitation required under the law and rules
  • The Texas Barbering and Cosmetology law and rules
  • Mental health awareness

For nail professionals, the Section 83.202 manicurist curriculum is a useful reference point. It lists topics such as nail structure and growth, equipment and implements, bacteriology, sanitation and safety, hazardous chemicals and ventilation, nail and skin diseases and disorders, artificial nails and product chemistry. Because the rule allows "any topic listed in Section 83.202," a manicurist-focused elective can be a strong fit, but each course still has to be approved by TDLR to count. Whether a particular course teaches one of these topics is something the course description should state.

Texas Manicurist Continuing Education for Combination Licenses

TDLR offers a combined Esthetician/Manicurist specialty license, and its forms page notes that once the two licenses are combined, they cannot be separated. A manicurist who is thinking about adding esthetics, or who already holds the combined license, should read the esthetician side of the process in the guide to renewing an esthetician license in Texas.

For manicurists who also hold a barber license, TDLR's bulletin states that CE taken for one license satisfies the requirement for the other. A dual license holder who has not held both licenses for at least 15 years must still take the additional 2 hours of barbering and cosmetology related topics until both licenses reach 15 years.

How to Complete Texas Manicurist Continuing Education Online

The process takes six steps. Most manicurists can finish the course in a few sessions and then handle renewal in one sitting.

1

Check the Date on the License

The CE belongs to the two-year renewal cycle, so the first move is to find the license expiration date and count back. Because providers have time to report and certificates take time to arrive, starting at least a few weeks early is the safe choice.

2

Choose an Approved Provider

TDLR's bulletin points licensees to its search for approved continuing education providers. A manicurist should confirm the provider appears there before paying. The guide to verifying a Texas CE provider walks through the check in a few minutes.

3

Take a Course That Covers All Four Hours

A package that does not include both the sanitation hour and the human trafficking hour is incomplete. Pinnacle Compliance Education LLC (TDLR Provider #2512) offers a 4-hour online Texas CE course built around the sanitation, human trafficking and elective hours TDLR requires, and it can be completed from a phone or computer between clients.

4

Save the Certificate

The provider issues a course completion certificate within 15 days from the end of the course. TDLR requires the licensee to retain a copy for two years after completion, because the department may ask to see CE records during an inspection or investigation.

5

Confirm the Hours Posted

The provider is responsible for reporting the hours, and the report is due no later than seven days after the course is completed. A manicurist can verify the result in TDLR's Continuing Education Courses Look Up. If the entry has not posted after seven days, the first call goes to the provider. If the question stays open, the Education and Examination division can be reached at (512) 463-6599 or (800) 803-9202. As a last resort, TDLR notes that a complaint can be filed against the provider.

6

Renew the License

Once the hours are on file, Texas manicurist continuing education is complete and the manicurist renews through TDLR's online system. The TDLR renewal page for barbering and cosmetology licensees asks about license type, license status and CE completion, and then points to the correct renewal path. For the deadline, fee and portal walkthrough, the companion article on Texas manicurist license renewal covers each part in detail.

Fees and Late Renewal in Brief

The cost of Texas manicurist continuing education is paid to the CE provider. The license renewal fee is separate and goes to TDLR. TDLR's license renewal page lists the renewal fee and late-renewal rules for practitioners:

Renewal TimingTDLR Fee
On time$50
Late, expired 90 days or less$75 (1.5 times the fee)
Late, expired 91 days to 18 months$100 (2 times the fee)
Expired 18 months to 3 yearsPetition TDLR's Executive Director; $100 fee
Expired 3 years or moreCannot be renewed; apply for a new license

Licenses expired for more than three years cannot be renewed, and the requirements for an initial license must be met again.

Lawful Presence Documents

Effective January 26, 2026, certain initial applications and renewals may require lawful-presence documentation. Not every applicant or licensee is asked. TDLR instructs licensees to submit documents only when TDLR specifically requests them, and it lists the accepted documents on its lawful presence page.

If TDLR requests renewal documents and they are not provided, the license expires on its existing expiration date, although late renewal remains available once the documents are submitted. This step is separate from CE, so finishing the 4 hours does not replace it.

Mistakes to Avoid With Texas Manicurist Continuing Education

!

Waiting until the final week

Reporting can take up to seven days and the certificate up to 15 days, so a last-minute course leaves no cushion.

!

Buying from a provider that is not approved

Only department-approved courses count toward the requirement.

!

Retaking the same course

TDLR does not give credit for the same course twice.

!

Skipping the look-up

Completing a course is not the same as having the hours on file. A two-minute check protects the renewal.

!

Ignoring a TDLR request for documents

An unanswered lawful presence request can cause the license to expire on its existing date.

!

Letting the license lapse for years

After three years of being expired, a license cannot be renewed.
